Roots / Roots Cellar
interior/exterior design/build
Roots Restaurant & Roots Cellar Wine Bar in the Ever-Developing Brewers
Hill Area of Milwaukee, opened February 2004. The building itself, built
under the direction of Kubala Washatko Architects was constructed with reclaimed
materials. Restaurant Owners, Chef John Raymond & General Manager Rebecca
Goldberger, wanted an atmosphere that was warm & inviting, full of texture
yet not a distraction from the 100% Organic Cuisine. They approached Sup
Design & Flux Design for the beautiful wood & intricate steel work that
identifies the interior.
Sup Designís use of solid woods is at once contemporary
& timeless, articulated angles & deep stained finishes enrich the interior
with bold shapes & elegant transitions. Flux Designís ornate steel work
& innovative approaches to concrete surfaces liven & solidify the experience.
The steel ìrootsî seems to reach out of the walls & support the staircases,
bar structures & signage.
The Entire Project exemplifies the intelligent
combination of the old world & contemporaneous influences of Milwaukee.
Old materials used in an innovative application, & integral concerns resolved
with intuitive design approaches. Though conservative blood runs deep &
old habits die hard, when empirical concerns are approached in an honest
& practical manner our way of working & living can truly develop.
